FFFree Mix(tape) Series, Vol. 3: Spring in Winter Edition

I decided to give the home tape deck a much needed break for this third edition of the FFFree Mixtape Series and try something different. This time around you'll get a 16-track cd-r compilation loaded with a variety of fringe sounds. The packaging was assembled using spare record jackets and modified gig poster art created by fellow free form ally, Nora Myers. The classic Sharpie-style florescent doodling was done by the hand of Ms. Autumn Perron.

It's quite simple how this all works: write to us and let us know that you want one of these mixes and we'll send one to you free of charge. We encourage you, however, to share with us your own mixes, original music, artwork, writings, recipes (I'm serious about this!), poetry, etc. - but that's entirely up to you.

Again, get in touch with us if you're interested.

UPDATE: These are now all gone. Be on the lookout for Vol. 4 in the coming months

Over the past four years, Sean McCann has had an impressive run of releases that span various styles and approaches – from folk-inspired dirges to sparkling synth soundscapes to drone minimalism - capped off by last year’s terrific album The Capital on Aguirre Records. McCann is now set to release his first full-length album of 2012, a collaboration with fellow Los Angeles-based musician and Ekhein labelhead, Matthew Sullivan. This album, entitled Vanity Fair, is coming out in the first official batch of releases this week on McCann's new Recital imprint.

We recently had a chance to speak with Sean over the phone and asked him some questions about his new label and record, and about how his own music has developed over the years. We air that interview on this week's podcast show and play a few tracks from the new and forthcoming Recital releases, not to mention some forthcoming solo material that McCann is currently working on.

For more information and to order many of the releases heard on this show, head over to the Recital website.

For this week's podcast show we got a chance to speak with Seattle-based musician Norm Chambers, whom records under the name Panabrite, a project we’ve grown quite fond of here on the show over the past year or so. Chambers has had a string of incredible limited run releases on such labels as Tranquility Tapes, Sturmundrugs, Hooker Vision, and Gift Tapes. And he’s now set to release his first LP entitled Soft Terminal on Digitalis in the coming weeks.

Chambers' rhythmically-charged, yet melodically complex work as Panabrite draws from various corners of electronic music’s rich history, tracing back to the early composers of library music, that being the “mood music” or “background music” used in television, film, and commercials, but was never widely available to the general public. Chambers, in fact, has a wealth of knowledge in the area of library music, offering up bits of information and rare recordings through his Lunar Atrium blog. In our conversation with Norm, we discuss his interest in library music and his work as Panabrite. He was also kind enough to put together some of his favorite library music tracks for us to play on this week’s show. We also play a few tracks from some of the recent Panabrite releases, including something off of that new Digitalis LP.
