FFFavorite Albums of 2012

Here's round two of Free Form Freakout's favorite releases of 2012, this time a list of albums that really captured my attention. With a few exceptions, all of these albums have appeared on the podcast shows at some point during the year or certainly will in the weeks ahead. Again, make what you will of the rank-ordered approach to all of this. I'd like to think that if people have checked in on a regular basis, though, that there should be very few surprises here. For me, Jason Lescalleet's Songs About Nothing release really stood out amongst the rest of the albums I heard this year for its sheer unclassifiable boldness and beauty. It's serious music with a sense of humor and purpose that stirs a wide range of emotions and is completely unlike anything else I heard.

Facebook "likes" and YouTube posts can only go so far, so please stop by your local independent record store or visit some of the great mailorder sites listed below to support these artists and labels if you come across something you're curious about. You can also click on the label links for more information on each release and for ordering purposes.

FFFavorite Tapes of 2012

Similar to last year, I've decided against doing an end-of-the-year recap-style show for one of the final podcasts of 2012. Instead, I'm planning to just move forward with more new music and with one more feature with Pat Murano (Decimus, Kelippah Records et al). Again, like last year, I've put together an overview of some of my favorite releases that have appeared on the podcast show throughout the year. This week, it's a list of my favorite tapes. In the next week or so, I'll also post a list of some of my favorite albums (and maybe a few reissues too).

Yes, I went ahead and rank-ordered these, which you can make of whatever you'd like. In general, these were/are the tapes that I keep coming back to, the ones that pull you into a unique soundworld. The Duets tape, however, was for me the clear-cut, no-brainer for best tape release of the year. It features such a seamless mix of music and, in my mind, several of the significant players in the current experimental tape underground. It sort of has the feel of being like the C86 of this particular network of artists and labels, certainly an important document of it at the very least.

You can click on the label links for more information on each release and for ordering purposes. You may also need to check out these fine mailorder sites for availability: Discriminate Music, Tomentosa, Mimaroglu Music Sales, Experimedia, 905 Tapes.

This week's show marks the 50th podcast produced by Free Form Freakout in the past two years. We didn't do anything particularly special to mark this occasion. In fact, it didn't even occur to us until after the show was completed that it was anything different. But, I guess that's sort of fitting as the MUSIC has always been our main focus. I would like to, however, extend a big thank you to all the people who have appeared on the show over the years and to all the people that continue to make music that moves and inspires us to keep this show moving forward. Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who carves out the time to STOP and LISTEN.

KMSU kicked off its Fall Pledge Drive this week and we are hoping to hear from some of you FFF listeners out there. Our station relies heavily on listener support to help pay for the majority of its regular operating costs, which seem to be increasing at an alarming rate in recent years. If you value the type of programming that our station offers or what FFF is up to, then we really need to hear from you. You can make a pledge in any dollar amount by calling 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810. You can also donate online at www.kmsu.org.

FFF will be offering some exclusive pledge drive premiums made available by the good folks at De Stijl Records on Thursday's show. For every $25 pledge, you can pick out one of their recent CD releases from CS Yeh, Samara Lubelski, or Robust Worlds.

Also, the station is offering up the amazing 4CD Big Star box set entitled "Keep An Eye On The Sky" at the $100 pledge level. To sweeten the deal, Carl is throwing in an extra $20 gift card to Tune Town for every person that pledges at this level. So, that's some serious extra bang for your buck.

As always, thanks for listening!!

Jandek Study Group Overnight #4

The a capella period of Jandek's catalog is fascinating and unnerving. The three albums from this period are among his starkest and most haunting, and that's saying something from an artist like Jandek. This show features an interview with San Antonio-based poet, writer, publisher, and long-time Jandek fan, Bill Shute. Check out the Kendra Steiner Editions website to find out more about Bill's various pursuits.

We were thrilled to have Graham Lambkin join us once again on this week's podcast show. This time around our conversation focused primarily on the forthcoming Shadow Ring double LP collection called Remains Unchanged that is due out on his Kye imprint in the coming weeks. This collection is made up of all unreleased material and charts an alternate, yet equally compelling, history of Lambkin’s former group - who created a bold and singular body of work within the decade they were active.

In addition to airing our conversation with Lambkin on this week’s show, we also played several selections from the new Remains Unchanged collection, along with a few other tracks from The Shadow Ring taken from their full-length releases. Graham selected a few additional songs to include as fair examples of the music that influenced The Shadow Ring during different periods in the group's history. And to close out the show, we played a few tracks from other recent Kye releases.

For more information and to order available titles, check out the Kye Records blog. Kye releases are also available from these fine mailorder folks: Mimaroglu, Forced Exposure, Aquarius Records, Volcanic Tongue, Weird Forest, and Eclipse.

*Note: These tracks are also available on the Life Review (1993-2003) 2CD compilation released on Kye.

It has been over two months since I’ve put together a straightforward, guest-free, non-feature podcast, and man has there been some truly amazing music that has made its way to my various playback devices in that time. It took a good week or two alone to settle on a playlist and sequence for this show that sounded satisfactory to these ears given the wealth of material to choose from, but I can honestly say that some of my favorite releases of the year thus far are contained within this show. I had every intention of writing a lengthy piece highlighting some of the key releases herein, but I couldn’t bring myself to focus just on some and not the others. So, as a general statement, I feel like this is some of the strongest material released by nearly all of the artists and labels featured on this episode. That’s that, just listen . . .

One thing I would like to highlight, though, is a new segment that we rolled out this week called the Foxy Contributor’s Pick. As mentioned when we first began to partner with Foxy Digitalis on these podcasts, one of the goals was to open things up and make the show a bit more interactive. This is a small first step in that direction. This new segment will have different Foxy Digitalis contributors select a track by an artist, band, label (etc.) that has been capturing their imagination and give them an opportunity to explain or simply share their thoughts on their selection. Think of it as the Secret Stash section with a narrator. Anyways, Brad Rose was the first to jump into the fold and he picked a gem from Unidiscus, a lesser-known project of Norm Chambers (a.k.a. Panabrite). Be on the lookout for more of these contributor picks in the weeks ahead.
