This week's highlights include some interesting fragmentary pop, the first of which comes from a brand new release out on Stunned by the Philadelphia-based group, Remote Islands. Days of Heaven features a veritable busload of musicians (and instruments) under the direction of group mastermind, Colin Pate. Pate and company weave together an impressive collection of widely varied songs that I'm suspecting will find a much larger audience, as it bloody well should. Son of Salami is also creating some engaging pop songs, albeit of a far more demented and tongue-in-cheek variety. Son of Salami (a.k.a. Joey Pizza Slice) uses 'eraser headless tape recording' methods and pens songs with titles such as "My Penis is a Fortune Teller" and "I Got Lost On A Acid Trip", which, let's face it, could all get a little grating on the nerves if not for the simple fact that there are some incredibly catchy tunes spread across this record. If there's a shortage of portable cassette players in Vermont, though, you now know who to blame.

We also played a track from Hobo Cubes from this exquisite Inscriptions Vol. 1 double cassette compilation that Sacred Phases recently put out. Hobo Cubes is currently on the road with Femminielli and Das Amore w/ JLK, making their way through our area this week as part of the Hobo Cult Records/Los Discos Enfantasmes May tour. Check'em out if you can. Another double cassette release of gorgeous, bittersweet sounds comes to us from Ous Mal, a Finnish duo that crafts melody-rich ambient soundscapes that are far more involved than that description implies. And one final release I have to mention is the Pacific Support benefit compilation that Draft recently put out. By buying this release, not only does all of your money go towards the relief/recovery efforts in Japan, but you also get an impeccable collection of some of the most forward-thinking synth/electronics artists operating today: Rene Hell, Matt Carlson, The North Sea, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Panabrite, etc., etc. It's a win/win situation, so get in the game while there are still copies available.
