Thought I'd dig this show up from the archives to replay as a webcast this week as 2010 was another stellar year for all things Digitalis. The audio for the interview sections is a bit rough, so please pardon the "mechanical frog" tones of Brad's voice. But the interview covers quite a bit of ground, including Foxy Digitalis (the webzine), Digitalis Recordings (the label), and Altar Eagle (Brad and Eden's excellent recording project).

FFFreakout: Podcast #4

Skoal Kodiak "Cruel Tic" Cold As Fuck LP compilation (Insides Music)
Sunken "The Evidence" New Zealand Eels LP (Emerald Cocoon)
Locrian "Omega Vapors" Dissolvers split LP w/ Century Plants (Tape Drift)

Spun the first vinyl offerings from Eric Hardiman's consistently great Tape Drift label. The first was a limited 7" lathe from his own Rambutan project which Byron Coley recently covered in his "Size Matters" column in The Wire (#321) stating:

"Erasing the Past . . . mixes stillness and clatter in equal measures. On the A side, a small drone figure repeats while everything else crumbles slowly onto your shoulders, making an embarrassingly big pile of mock-dandruff. On the flip, Hardiman goes for a steampunk drone that really clanks the old iron, as they say."

The second is a split 12" with his duo Century Plants and the mighty Locrian from Chicago, who have been on an absolute tear this year. Check out the Small Doses website for more on their output and activity.

Silver Bullets "Farlo Respirane, Cosi" Citta Invisibiii CS (Stunned)

Broke out some things from a new stash that arrived from the very fine Eggy Tapes and Mailorder out of Portland. The Woolen Men cassette contains some highly addictive scruffy pop gems and, while I've just about reached my threshold level for extended synth jammers, this Polyps tape offers a rather refreshing take on the whole synth/electronics bit. Also, dug into the excellent 3" CD box set that Peasant Magik released awhile back to mark their 100th release. Peasant Magik have a massive batch of new tapes ready for order, which you can sample some of the sounds over at their website.

Any amount that you can pledge is greatly appreciated and helps to pay for such basics as new CD players, headphones, and turntables, which we are in desperate need of. As you heard on today's show, I'm sick of broken turntables wreaking havoc on my new Ohio rock LPs dammit!! There are, however, some cool premiums offered at certain dollar amounts which you can scope out at the KMSU website. Another essential release from De Stijl Records:
"While in the widely neglected 39 Clocks, he made records that never sold and played gigs that few ever saw, Juergen Gleue has arguably been the most important exponent of electrified German sound since the late 1970s. Phantom Payn Daze was made in the mid to late 90s and has never been released. It's his final LP and is overflowing with all the elements that romanticized, loner / stoner music claims, an encoded expression of highly private feelings, an ambiguous, emotional quotient, and a dark, murkily melodic vibe. It's a record that first and foremost lives and breathes with an endless stream of great songs. But perhaps it's most curious component is it's amazingly prescient sound, a precursor to so many of today's lo fi acts, all wrapped up in their San Francisco hair."

We played some things to be on the look out for in the coming weeks. The new self-titled LP from Mother of Fire is absolutely amazing, as is the Regolith Vol. 1 LP compilation of current Minneapolis psych acts coming out on the Moon Glyph label. Speaking of Minneapolis psych, albeit of the ultra-obscure, whacked-out 70's variety, this album "Never Mind" from Damin Eih, A.L.K., Brother Clark that Nero's Neptune reissued is definitely worth checking out too.

"In June 2009, Chris Knox suffered a life-altering stroke at his home in Grey Lynn, New Zealand. "Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox" is a celebration of Chris and his music. Chris Knox was instrumental in bringing New Zealand punk and alternative music to international audiences with Tall Dwarfs, Toy Love and his solo work. Artists from the U.S. (Jeff Mangum, Yo La Tengo, Mountain Goats, Will Oldham, Stephin Merritt, Bill Callahan, Lou Barlow, Jay Reatard), New Zealand (The Bats, The Verlaines, The Chills) and the world over have donated their time & talents covering songs from Knox's extensive catalog so that all proceeds can go toward assisting Chris with his recovery. Stay updated on Chris at the Stroke website."
